Lewisham students and teachers take VIP’s Young Producers’ Project to the next level

Students in Lewisham schools are enjoying a Young Producers’ Project with Charanga’s VIP Studio Sessions. Our very own Max Wheeler visited Conisborough College and Bonus Pastor School in September and will return this month to introduce hundreds of young people to music production and composition.

The VIP Studio Sessions programme incorporates an online studio and a suite of resources to teach music production and contemporary genres in the classroom, including Rap, Lo-Fi and House.

As part of the Young Producers’ Project, we break down the process of music production into manageable pieces for students to work through. Young people are then encouraged and able to create their own music. ‘I’ve been working at home and have finished two tracks already,’ one student told us.

Max has worked alongside artists Intalekt and Gillian Wood, music teachers and Lewisham Music to deliver these fantastic workshops. One teacher has already pledged to ‘change my scheme of work to include it’ having taken part.

We also caught up with Jazz pianist Nathaniel, a music teacher from Bonus Pastor School. He told us that all of his students, including those with behavioural issues, are really engaged in the project and making good music.

Nathaniel himself has been working on Rap and Lo-Fi tracks, incorporating Jazz elements into them – proof that VIP can also help boost teachers’ music production skills or knowledge about contemporary genres of music.
